Become the Speaker & Leader You Want to Be

The first thing most people hear about Toastmasters is that membership can help them become better presenters and conquer public speaking fears. That’s true, but it’s also true that Toastmasters offers much more. By participating in the meetings, members enjoy learning and practicing skills in various areas that can improve not only their social lives, but their professional lives as well. If you’ve never attended a Toastmasters meeting, you may be puzzled by the assortment of activities available to members. Not everyone gives a prepared speech at every meeting. Volunteers enjoy several roles that help them develop confidence in other areas. Furthermore, a member can develop skills without ever volunteering – simply showing up and having fun can bring surprising benefits. Indeed, participating in Toastmasters meetings will not only improve your confidence when it comes to public speaking, it will invariably encourage you to grow as a person.

What Toastmasters is about

The Toastmasters slogan is "Better speaking, thinking and listening". Members are given the opportunity to give prepared speeches, introduce speakers and conduct meetings. While the subject matter of speeches varies, Toastmasters provides manuals that guide members through their delivery method, offering details on tried and tested presentation styles. Members also build quick-thinking skills as they give one- to two-minute impromptu speeches on general subjects. "Thinking on your feet" is a life skill used during business meetings and social conversation. Constructive feedback, or evaluation, is the heart of the Toastmasters program. Whenever members present a prepared speech, an evaluator will point out the presentation's strengths and offer suggestion for improvement. In the beginning, fellow club members will applaud the effort, but later they will applaud visible growing skill.

INFORMATION: The Stellenbosch Toastmasters club is made up of approximately 20 to 25 members who meet once a month (usually on the second Thursday of each month) from 18h30 to 22h00. Guests and members are welcome anytime from 18h15 to enjoy a glass of sherry with us. At present, the majority of our club members (although also fluent in English) are native Afrikaans speakers, but naturally we extend a very warm welcome to English speaking guests and members!

COST PER EVENING: If you are not yet sure whether you'd like to become a member of Toastmasters, please note that you are more than welcome to join our meetings as a guest. This means that you can just relax and observe how things are done - you won't be expected to participate in any of the proceedings, unless of course you would like to join in the fun! The dress code is smart casual and the cost per evening for members and guests alike are R40 per person, which includes a delicious warm buffet meal.

FEE: If you are interested in joining our club, please note that the once-off joining fee is US $20, and the fee for a period of six months is US $27 (payable in April and October each year). The correct amount in South African Rands will be determined by the current exchange rate at the time of joining. Please note that the applicable fee will be calculated on a pro rata basis if you decide to join our club after April or October of the respective year.
